I am either out of Deep Map Pilots postcards (not posters) or almost out. I will not be reordering, as the print quality was not really up to my standards—as a result, everyone who ordered the postcard set received either two sets of postcards (for display front + back simultaneously), received extra goodies in the envelope, both, or, if you ordered them more recently, you paid less than the initial pricepoint.
I recently acquired a new giclee printer which means high-quality prints of all sizes are in your immediate future. If you want a set of DMP postcards and didn’t get one, chances are that you’ll get another opportunity to acquire less-than-poster-sized prints in the near future.

As of tonight, ALL Deep Map Pilots orders (with the exception of Ego Asassin’s screwed up order, and everyone still waiting for their Eliza’s Friend or Family Complimentary Art of the Month Club orders EDIT: and also the order shipping to Gemini) have been either shipped or are sitting in my mailbox waiting to be swept up by the armored pterodactyl jockey that lands on my roof and takes my mail away. To the post office? I don’t know. The ‘dactyl smells like a stable fire.
This means that all domestic orders still en route or currently in my mailbox should arrive at their destinations by the 25th or a little after, so I didn’t completely ruin Chrimbles. probably.
I sat down to process orders today and made a stunning discovery.
An order from Chile was unusual enough—I ship to Australia and the UK and Canada all the time, but other international destinations are more rare. My interest was piqued immediately, but when I clicked the order to start printing shipping labels and such, I was absolutely floored.
The Gemini Observatory is one of the most important observatories working today. They hold the honor of taking the first image of a directly observable exoplanet. They produce images you have almost certainly marveled at, and the chances that their images made up some of my reference material during the creation of the Deep Map Pilots illustrations are very high. My father is a science fiction novelist and my grandfather was a NASA engineer. This is, personally and professionally, huge.
I just told Warren. He said, and I quote, “That is INCREDIBLE.”
They ordered complete sets of both the photos and the postcards, but they’re going to be getting a lot more than that. I owe them big. We all do. And the fact that they like my art enough to buy it, well. I’m sorry, there seems to be some stardust in my eye.
EDIT: I also got an order from someone at MIT. Honestly, this makes it all worthwhile.
woke up this afternoon to a pile of boxes full of posters and postcards (finished Pilots, picked up yesterday), a pitch for a comic called BLACK HOLE WIZARD in my inbox, a 2 lbs bucket of powdered bleach ready to scour my scalp, and a painting dry enough to finish the final detailing before the show on Saturday. did you know i’m in an art show on Saturday? it’s in Oakland. here’s a link to more information. the two Rent Boy paintings will be on display and up for sale for the entirety of November, which is a good month for them. not so commercial and cold as December, but not as hammy as October. November is the tall, dignified, last gasp of autumn, with only minimal holiday interference (who the fuck cares about thanksgiving).
right now it seems like the Deep Map Pilots will start to ship out next week, after the art show. all preorder folks will receive EXTRA GOODIES because they were dumb enough to send me money prior to any actual product actually existing. details on those extra goodies will be forthcoming, but as of now i’m thinking DMP buttons (remember? i have a button maker???? that i never use anymore because i’ma fucking moron??????) and the companion postcards to whatever posters you ordered.
i am also about to make the full-res, unflattened PSD files for all five pilots available for download/remix/home printing/educational purposes, probably on the same model as Achewood’s Honor System Store. i’d appreciate it if you didn’t sell my art for your own personal gain, i guess, but it’s not like Deep Map Pilots is such a hot property that you stand to get rich from bootleg t-shirts or whatever.

All DEEP MAP PILOTS posters are now going to press, and I have a full complement of shipping supplies. It looks like they’ll be ready for pickup around the 20th at the latest, and since I’m using PSPrint, which is based in Oakland, I don’t have to wait for them to ship the posters to me; I’ll just be picking them up from their brick and mortar myself. Tomorrow I will be designing and submitting the postcards (images front; text back). I’ve had to make a couple tiny adjustments in the layout of some of the art, like nudging text around or resizing it slightly, etc, due to 11 x 17” and 4 x 6” dimensional requirements. I doubt you’ll be able to see the differences in the final work. The hardest part is stopping myself from going back and “fixing” everything “wrong” about them.
Today I put the order in for the Deep Map Pilots posters and postcards. Note that I submitted the order at exactly 4:20 (resulting in the 4:22 confirmation emails), because I’m basically the coolest dude.
I’m now working on getting the artwork up to spec for printing purposes, which means fucking around with dimensions and adding bleeds and converting to CMYK and doing layout for the backs of the postcards (which will have Warren’s stories on them. I wanted to get the stories onto the posters too but couldn’t figure out a way to do it without fucking the layout.). After that we’re looking at some pretty grueling packing and shipping, but I ordered some ridiculously cheap and plentiful 4x6” sticker labels from Uline alone with the mailing tubes, so I will be able to just print your cute lil addresses out instead of writing a dang thing.
EDIT: Yes you can still order posters! As of right now there is no rush to do so—I ordered extra stock, and not just enough to fill the preorders, and sales of posters and so on will continue until I run out, at least. Longer if demand continues, although I don’t think it will.

I wish I could have just bought the stock and sold it directly, but unfortunately the minimum orders made that impossible for my razor’s edge budget. Once I hit approximately $160 in preorders (which I’m close to already) I’ll be able to order the initial round of 25 posters for each design, plus mailing tubes. The postcards are sort of a gamble to see if I even get enough preorders to cover ordering costs but we’ll see. Refunds will happen immediately if any part of the preordering process falls through.
Thanks for the orders so far, and after work today I’ll come up with some nice little incentives to stick up your tubes if you’re one of the preorderlies.
